The mission of The Fly Program is to raise awareness of depression, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and suicide in the Australian male community, facilitating unique programs and awareness campaigns that focus on education and peer support through pathways of adventure, mountain biking and the disciplines of both fly and conventional fishing methods (alpine, coastal and Inland). The organization is focused on providing resources to help Australian men to find a release and increase their quality of life, whether directly, or indirectly touched by these threads of mental illness and instituting an new outlet – participation in the natural world as a reprieve from the day-to-day challenges too many men face in our community.
The concept of The Fly Program is very unique and it is built around four key components Explore, Cast, Discover and Recover.
Exploration is the very reason why many pursue the next bend in the river and peddle over the next mountain pass – and it is through exploration we have the platform we can explore our inner-selves. The Fly Program is committed to providing men an environment where they not only explore amazing locations on the mountain bike, or with the fishing rod at hand but use these experiences as the platform to explore new frontiers within themselves.
Casting a line by a mountain stream, or an untouched shoreline has a powerful means to engage an instinctive and primal part of the male psyche. At The Fly Program we understand that casting a line is a wonderful platform to help Australian men escape the disruptions of everyday life and become the vehicle that takes them to some of the most inspiring locations - but also ‘casting’ awareness of the impact of depression, PTSD and suicide in our male society
Through discovery in nature we can learn to escape the distractions of everyday life and bring clarity to thought. We believe at The Fly Program that discovery of our world is also an amazing metaphor, assisting Australian men discover new places within themselves through life changing adventures.
At The Fly Program we believe nature is like fuel for the soul, with numerous studies demonstrating that exposure and participation in the natural world increases energy and a heightened sense of well-being, increasing feelings of happiness and health. It is our sole objective to get more men in the outdoors, as active participants and create an environment we can tackle these threads of mental illness as a team, not suffer as individuals.
